Futsal

Futsal

Support Sport will shortly be running Futsal sessions across Coventry and Warwickshire Beginning at the start of july. See the video below to show how Futsal can improve your 11-a-side game!

The sessions will be focused on skills development. improving the fundamentals week in week out. The main skills we will be working on will include...
 1. Rewards
Futsal develops the same basic technique, skills, tactics and knowledge of the game as the 11v11 outdoor game.
2. Ball touches
In a statistical study comparing futsal to indoor arena soccer with walls, players touch the ball 210% more often which will increase a player’s ball competency.
3. Ball control
With limited space, defined touchlines and constant opponent pressure, improved ball control technique and skills are required. See a typical video of skills you may learn below!

4. Speed of play
Constant opponent pressure and a 4 second restart law means players must learn to play and think fast, which develops intelligent players.
5. Support play
Without a wall or rebound boards to rely on in order to escape from tight situations, you must make supporting runs when team mates have the ball.
6.Continuity of play
Action is continuous and physically demanding, so players must continue the play instead of stopping and watching, which in turn develops physical conditioning.
7. Knowledge
With four on-court players, plus a goalkeeper that can join in the play, all the basic components of the outdoor game are present. As the action is non-stop, players are able to develop an improved technical understanding of futsal very quickly.
8. Finishing
The goal and penalty area assist the goalkeeper in narrowing the angle, which means players must learn to shoot accurately and deceive the goalkeeper instead of just relying on power alone.
9. Play well, play fair
The laws of the game of futsal, encourage playing skilfully and punish physical contact fouls. Gameplay also encourages respect for all players and officials.
10. Fun!
Futsal is a fast-paced, fun, skill-oriented game that tests your abilities at whatever level, whilst developing all-round individual technique.

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small sided football game that is widely played across the world and is officially recognised by both UEFA and FIFA.

The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill and ability in situations of high pressure, and is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for football competencies that can be translated into the 11-a-side format of the game.

Many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with supporting their footballing development; players of the calibre of Pele, Zico, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Lionel Messi to name but a few of the South American legends all played and enjoyed Futsal.  But Futsal has not just helped produce South American football stars, on the European stage Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Xavi, Fabregas amongst many others have played Futsal to develop their skills.

“Futsal was important in helping to develop my ball control, quick thinking, passing….also for dribbling, balance, concentration…. Futsal was very, very important, no doubt.” – Pele, World Cup Winner: 1958, 1962 & 1970

Futsal is a five-a-side game, normally played on a flat indoor pitch with hockey sized goals and a size 4 ball with a reduced bounce.  It is played to touchlines and all players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball over head-height.  Games are 20 minutes per half, played to a stopping clock (similar to basketball) with time-outs permitted.

There are a number of differences to our traditional version of small sided football, but the dominant elements are the absence of rebound boards and amendments in the laws that encourage and foster skilful, creative play above the physical contact that tends to be a feature of English five-a-side.
